How To Design Your Living Room Using A Red Sofa

Let’s talk about red sofas! Some love them, some hate them. I’m a fan of color!!! Nearly all colors are cool with me and fun to design around. But how do you work with a red sofa? Isn’t red a played out color? Most colors can work in your home, so long as you know how to style them and what to pair them with. So, let’s start with this beautiful, cool and funky sofa from @famalivingusa . This sofa is called Josephine.

So, this would be the obvious go- to choice for most people, as it’s a neutral and a simple match to make. And yes, this design works well but it’s because of the balance. The typical run created with red, black and grey tends to look too overdone by trying to incorporate way too much of all 3 colors. Let it ride by using red to ground the space as the focal point in the room, but then focus on the accent colors for consistency throughout the design.
Also, notice my fun play on a coffee table. Design doesn’t need to be so literal! These 3 ottomans look great on this space. I added 3 because it was the correct proportion in proximity to the length of the sofa. It creates a great vibe here.

This is another neutral, I know, but brown can be used in a sophisticated way to add richness to our design when using our red sofa. We have paired it with another barrel style chair by @besthomefurnishings in a deep cocoa fabric and painted the walls in a smooth chocolate brown. Here i brought in one extra red element in the curtains, because too much brown will drag the space down. Balance here is 🔑!
Again, we make sure to use consistency with our shapes, by repeating curves throughout the space.

These accent pillows by #FamaLiving that yo can customize on this sofa, are so much fun! I could have went nuts and made each section of this sofa, the welt and the pillows in a many colors as i wanted and that’s what brings me to this design…MULTI-COLORED! So long as the color can coordinate with your main color, it can work!!! People get so caught up in their design that must don’t have fun with it. Look all over instagram and notice all of these “stylists” with tens of thousands of likes on their simple designs in monochromatic tones. BORING!
So the rules for using other colors with red can be a bit complex. Getting the undertones right can be tricky. Here, I pulled the green out of the throw pillow print and put it on the wall and used it for our accent chair, but i could have easily used a great orange or blue or even went yellow, although it might have looked a bit like a @mcdonalds or @burgerking lounge. Lol. This room color also grounds the artwork on the wall, which is from a great NY based artist named Ike Slimster, who creates stunning, modern black art for canvas or print. These two pics can take this design anywhere in terms of color palette, so long as it’s done tastefully.
I love this accent pillow- There were rules? (I’m a rebel) 😇
