A Tale of A Green Sofa

How do you decorate around a green sofa? Here are a few options to help you understand…

Green… what can I say about it? Green velvet sofas are a rage, but most either love or hate green! I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone who was on the fence on it. It can be a very beautiful addition to your home when used in furniture and I’m guessing that’s what convinced Debra to purchase this lovely modern sofa. Then her and Alex, her boyfriend, began to fight about walls and what they’d do with the rest of the room. Do they just paint? If they do, I have to explain that neutrals are not their only options, yet they might not want to play with too much color. Then they asked about one of my most favorite things- WALLPAPER. Well, with that option there is no shortage of prints that work with a green sofa.

My first way to narrow this down for them was to discuss their style and budget. They made this easy for me. They are into modern, geometric or abstract prints and nothing with multi-colors, so I went to the option of a neutral green print as one selection and an abstract in a complimentary color as a second choice. Well, not so much a color. Alex expressed wanting to see neutral ideas with a touch of “pizzazz”. I went with the absence of color- black and the combination of all colors- white.

Here’s one half of the split design to discuss the choices for a green and white room.

When designing a room around a green sofa, it’s very easy to take the literal route, using the exact same color on the walls and then carrying that into the furnishings and decor. I did this, using gold as my accent metal, of course!

The most important aspects of this room design are the consistency of shapes. It’s the key to proper flow within a space. The rounding in the sofa means curves. To me, the best accent chair will have some bend in it. I selected barrel back chairs for every color option, because it’s the most complimentary style for this mid-century mod sofa.

What accent chair colors work here?

Purple, teal, yellow, black, brown, cognac and white.

DO NOT USE CREAM ANYWHERE, AS IT WILL NOT WORK WITH WHITE.

DO NOT DO A GREEN ACCENT CHAIR HERE! A DESIGNER WOULD NEVER DO THAT!

This look is clean and precise and beautiful!

Here is the option of blacks and charcoal with green.

Another sexy way to coordinate with your green sofa is to select an abstract or other printed wallpaper in a darker neutral so that your sofa stands out. Here I selected charcoal and silver metallic paper with silver accents and black accent furniture.

Because our accent color is so dark and crisp, we can now lighten the load with additional bright and light accent colors even if they are nowhere else in the room. Think of a dope outfit in green and black with a red, pink, lime green or purple purse! I threw in a pink pillow as an example of what can be done here. If you are too tame, you can go more literal with the color scheme and use this furry black pillow instead. I love the sophistication this vibe gives.

Here are some other paint colors that work well with this green sofa. Many of them are in this wallpaper’s floral print.

I love this floral print paper. It would have also been an option for Debra and Alex, but they didn’t want multi-colors and Alex isn’t into florals. You can see from the print, that any of these colors would look good on a wall behind this sofa. I believe that people take color way too seriously and many would be so scared to put such bold neutrals on their wall with a contrasting sofa in another strong color. Wait, did I say neutral? Yes, I sure did! Many of these beautiful colors are now considered neutrals in the design world, just like camouflage pants are a neutral in NY fashion. I forgot to include maroon and blush in this palette, but you get the point. Have fun with color! Gray is getting tired people!
